Diese Ammer besiedelt große Teile der südwestlichen Paläarktis von den Kanarischen Inseln, dem Nordwesten Afrikas, Portugal und Irland nach Osten bis in den Südwesten des Iran und Kasachstan. Die Grauammer bewohnt offene Landschaften mit einzelnen Bäumen oder Büschen und zumindest teilweise dichter Bodenvegetation, in Mitteleuropa vor allem extensiv genutztes Grünland, Ackerränder und Brachen.
